👣👣Terminology Tuesday👣👣 The A-Z of Podiatry The condition of the week is Fungal Toenails! Fungal nail infections are very common and not serious. However, they can take a long time to resolve. Fungal nail infections sometimes start at the edge of the nail, the infection often then spreads to the middle of the nail, making the nail discoloured and sometimes thicker in parts. The nail can also become brittle and pieces can break off. Sometimes the whole nail lifts off, causing pain and swelling in the skin around the nail. Fungal nail infections often develop when your feet are constantly warm and damp. You're more likely to get an infection if you wear trainers for a long time and have hot, sweaty feet. 👣👣Terminology Tuesday👣👣 The A-Z of Podiatry This week the condition ill be talking about is Eczema. Eczema is a very common skin condition that causes the skin to become itchy, dry and cracked. It is more common in children but can also develop in adults too. It's usually a long-term (chronic) condition, although it can improve significantly, or even clear completely. Eczema can affect the feet by causing dry, flakey, inflamed patches of skin. This can cause irritation, open wounds and cause the individual to become more susceptible to skin infections A common condition that affects the hands and feet is Dyshidrotic Eczema. This type of eczema causes itchy, fluid filled blisters on the hands or feet that come and go. The symptoms usually last 2 to 3 weeks at a time. The first symptom is often a burning or prickling feeling in the affected area. 👣👣Terminology Tuesday👣👣 The A-Z of Podiatry This week the letter is D and the word is Diabetes Diabetes is one of the most common medical conditions in the world. Currently, more than 5 million people in the UK alone are living with Diabetes (this is an all time high!) There are 2 types of diabetes, Type 1- where your body cannot make insulin and Type 2- also known as insulin resistance, where your body cant make enough insulin or what it does make, doesn't work effectively. Type 2 diabetes is the most common- with around 90% of people diagnosed as having type 2. The risk factors of type 2 diabetes are multiple and complex. They include age, family history and ethnicity, as well as living with weight issues. Research has consistently shown that for some people, combined lifestyle interventions - including diet, physical activity and sustained weight loss - can be effective in reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes by about 50%. There are a variety of foot complications that can arise due to diabetes, this can range anywhere from diminished sensation in the feet and reduced blood supply, to infections and the more severe, amputations. 👣👣Terminology Tuesday👣👣 The A-Z of Podiatry This week is the letter C and the word is Cracked Heels! Cracked heels are one of the most common conditions that I see within the clinic, especially coming into the summer months when individuals are more likely to be wearing open sandals or flipflops. Cracked heels are caused by the callus build up not being able to move flexibly to accommodate the movement of the foot. The skin then cracks to allow this movement to occur. Some individuals suffer with cracked heels more than others. Cracked heels can be treated easily using a scalpel to remove and thick, hard skin, filed to smooth using an abrasive paddle file and then regular moisturisation of the feet using a Urea based foot cream. At Easy Feet Podiatry, I recommend Flexitol or Dermatonics as my 'go to' foot creams. 👣👣Terminology Tuesday👣👣 The A-Z of Podiatry This week the topic is Bunions A Bunion (or Hallux Valgus to a podiatrist) are bony lumps that form on the sides of the big toes. This deformity is caused by a shift in the angle at the base of the big toe joint, causing it to develop and move sideways, pushing the big toe towards to the smaller toes. Bunions can be genetic (so you can thank your parents, or grandparents!) but they can also be caused by joint problems caused by osteoarthritis or Rheumatoid arthritis. unfortunately, its unclear why most bunions develop. Bunions can cause pain, stiffness and swelling in the big toe joint. It can cause issues with walking and being able to find wide enough shoes to accommodate the bunion deformity. Individuals who suffer with bunions should ensure they wear wide fitting, comfortable footwear that have laces or velcro straps to ensure correct fastening. Bunion pads can provide protection from the pressure in shoes, these are available from your local podiatrist or chemist. Pain killers may help reduce any pain and inflammation experienced with bunions. A GP or pharmacist can help with this. You may be referred by your GP or local podiatrist to a podiatric surgeon if other treatments have not helped and your bunions are getting worse. The operation wont return your foot to normal but most people find that it reduces their symptoms and improves the shape of the foot. For more information, contact the clinic during opening hours. This week I am starting Terminology Tuesday going through the A-Z of Podiatry! This week we are starting with Athletes Foot Athletes foot is a fungal skin infection, most commonly found on the soles of the feet and in between the little toes. Athletes foot is commonly seen in individuals who regularly take part in physical activities. It can also occur in individuals who do not change their shoes/socks regularly and those who are unable to dry adequately between their toes. This condition is easily treated with medication in the form of spray, cream or powder. Socks and shoes must be treated with an Anti-fungal spray too to kill any remaining fungal spores- if this isn't done, you may end up re-infecting yourself! High heels in particular, can be a major culprit in foot and ankle pain. They can also cause other issues such as calluses, corns and bunions! Wearing heels for extended periods of time can cause a host of foot issues, including Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis and even Stress Fractures! If you do wear high heels, try to limit your time in them and choose lower height heels with a wider base for better stability. When it comes to everyday footwear, make sure your shoes fit properly and have good arch support to prevent issues like Flat Feet and Plantar Fasciitis.
